Hyalite Recreation Area is one of the most popular recreation areas near Bozeman. Every activity from hiking and mountain biking to fishing and canoeing can be done within the bounds of Hyalite Recreation Area. Although it's more known as a summer recreation spot, there's also plenty to do here in the winter as well. Many of the hiking trails double as great nordic ski and snowshoe trails, and the Hyalite Resevoir is a great place to try ice fishing.
Here is a breakdown of the most popular summer and winter activities to try at Hyalite Recreation Area near Bozeman.
Hiking in Hyalite Recreation Area
There are many scenic trails to enjoy within the recreation area. One of the more popular trails is the Palisade Falls trail just southeast of the reservoir. Palisade Falls is an easy 1.1-mile out-and-back trail that's great for hiking and trailing. The titular waterfall is breathtaking to see, and you'll want to make sure you have your camera ready for a few well-earned pictures.
In addition to Palisade Falls, there are several longer trails closeby to the Hyalite Reservoir. The Westlake and Crescent Shore loop trail runs right along the western side of the reservoir for half of the 3.3 total miles, and the route is considered fairly gentle and easy to complete. Those looking for more of a challenging day-hike might want to try the Blackmore Lake trail, which covers 4.3 miles and features 905 feet of elevation gain. Although Blackmore Lake is a harder trail to complete, there's often fewer crowds and much more impressive scenic views to enjoy.
Hyalite Reservoir Boating & Fishing
The 206-acre Hyalite Reservoir is perhaps the biggest draw to the recreation area. You can launch boats, kayaks, and canoes from the north end of the reservoir or from the Hood Creek campground. And, because Hyalite Reservoir has a "no wake" rule, you can take stand-up paddleboards out on the water too without having to worry about fast-moving boaters. The tranquil water amidst gorgeous rocky mountain scenery makes for an excellent day afloat!
Fishing is another popular passtime both out on the reservoir and at the surrounding streams and alpine lakes. Across the recreation area, you can fish for Yellowstone cutthroat trout, Arctic grayling, brook trout, and rainbow trout. If you're visiting in the winter, you can even try a spot of ice fishing right on Hyalite Reservoir. See the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks website to learn more about local fishing requirements and regulations.
